What It Is

Yonder Echo is an Android app where you call out toward a virtual mountain and someone who happens to be listening answers with a short echo. You send up to five seconds of your voice with a different mountain echo each time, and you find small lights in the sky to answer other people's calls. Brief encounters happen on one shared mountain for people aged 18 and over. It is free and has no ads.

The Problem

Messengers and social networks assume you already know the people you talk to. There are few places to trade a light hello with a stranger, and those that exist ask for long conversations or a public profile.

Yonder Echo borrows the experience of shouting from a mountain and waiting for the echo, so people exchange echoes, not conversations. You call once, get one answer and reply once, and the encounter ends. With no pressure to keep it going, you can speak to someone you have never met.

Who It Is For

  • People who want a light hello with strangers: people who want a brief connection without a profile or a long conversation
  • People curious about voices from other countries: people who want to hear calls in many languages and answer them
  • People who like a quiet scene on screen: people who enjoy waiting for an answer while watching a mountain that changes with the time and season

Core Flow

  1. Practice: a short first-run tutorial lets you practice recording and echoes.
  2. Call out: press record to capture up to five seconds of your voice, listen to the mountain echo, then send it. You can also greet with a ready-made phrase instead.
  3. Answer: find a small light in the sky, listen to someone's call and answer in your chosen language.
  4. Reply back: the first person to answer your call is connected, and you can send one more reply or a heart.
  5. Wait: while you wait for an answer, send new calls or just watch the mountain.

Key Features

  • Five-second voice with a mountain echo: every recording gets a different echo effect, and you can switch to another one.
  • Ready-made phrases: greet with a phrase when speaking aloud is hard, and pick from ready-made replies when answering. Phrases in other languages show a translation into yours.
  • Eight languages: Korean, English, Japanese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Spanish, French and Portuguese. Each call carries a language badge, and you choose which languages you want to hear.
  • A living landscape: hand-painted dawn, daylight, sunset, starry night, autumn and snowy mountain scenes change with the time and season. Birds cross the daytime sky and shooting stars pass at night.
  • Watch the mountains: a mode that keeps the screen on while you wait for an answer and pauses when you switch apps.
  • Reply notifications: only people who want them turn on reply notifications.
  • Report and block: report an unpleasant call and block the person who made it.

Product Decisions

  • Encounters end quickly: only the first person to answer a call is connected, and once a reply starts the exchange lasts only 60 seconds. The final reply closes it soon after. Keeping it short is what lets people call again without pressure.
  • The mountain never feels empty, even with few people: how long a new call lasts follows how busy the mountain is, up to 24 hours when it is quiet and down to 60 seconds when it is crowded, so early calls do not vanish before anyone hears them.
  • No made-up people: only real calls appear in the sky. Even when the mountain looks empty, it is never filled with fake people or fake replies.
  • Voices are not translated: ready-made phrases are shown translated, but recorded voices pass on as they are. The texture of a voice is the heart of the app.
  • The original voice stays on the device: the raw recording is never sent; only the echoed audio, five seconds or less, is uploaded. The app is open about the fact that a voice can still be recognized after the effect and asks people not to share personal details.
  • No location: instead of real places, everyone shares one public mountain, and the weather is imagined.
  • Adults only: because the app exchanges voices with strangers, it is limited to people aged 18 and over.

Revenue Model

Free with no ads. As an Android pilot, the first step is confirming that the experience of calls and answers holds up.

Next Hypotheses

  • How long it takes to make a first call, to see whether the tutorial helps people take that first step.
  • The share of calls that get an answer and how long the wait is, to tune how long calls stay up.
  • How much not getting an answer lowers return visits.
  • Whether enough people gather during the pilot for calls and answers to meet.
