Mr. Latte Story

Whaloon Privacy Policy

This English page is a machine translation of the Korean original, so some wording may read a little off.

Whaloon (Android package net.mrlatte.whaloon) is a study timer where a whale swims across the screen while you study. It is operated by Mr. Latte. This policy applies to the app. Contact us at hello@mrlatte.net.

Delete your account

You can delete your account and everything it keeps at any time.

  • In the app: open Settings, tap Delete account, then Delete. Your account, the study record saved in it and the record on this device are deleted right away. Google may ask you to sign in again first.
  • Without the app: email hello@mrlatte.net from the email address of the Google account you use with Whaloon and ask us to delete your account. We delete the account and its study record within 30 days and reply when it is done.

Signing out does not delete anything. Usage statistics, if you turned them on, are not linked to your account and are kept by Google as described below.

Google sign-in

Signing in is optional. The timer, the voyage log, sea friends and the dark screen all work without it, and your record then stays on the device. After your first focus the app suggests signing in once so your record can follow you to another phone.

When you sign in, Firebase Authentication (Google) gives us your Google account's name, email address and a user identifier. We use them only to sign you in, to keep your record with your account and to answer you if you contact us. Whaloon never sees your Google password.

The study record kept with your account

When you are signed in, each focus session you finish is saved to Google Cloud Firestore (Seoul region) in a space that only your account can read or write, so it comes back when you sign in on another phone:

  • the subject's name and color
  • when it started and the time zone at that moment
  • the time you set and the time you actually focused (pauses removed)
  • whether you reached the time you set, used the dark screen, or paused and finished anyway

Your streak, buoys and sea friends are not stored; the device works them out from these sessions each time. When you first sign in, sessions already on the device are added to your account. The record is used only to give it back to you.

Saved only on your device

Your list of subjects, daily goal, last subject and time, sound and dark screen settings, language, usage statistics choice, the timer that is running and the dates you met sea friends stay on the device. If you have not signed in, your study record is on the device only. Clearing the app's storage in Android settings or uninstalling the app deletes them.

Notifications, alarms and Do Not Disturb

  • Notifications: the app tells you when a focus or a break ends, and shows the time left in a notification while a timer runs. The subject name is hidden on the lock screen.
  • Alarms & reminders: used to ring the moment a focus ends with the screen off. The timer works without it; the alert may then come a little late.
  • Do Not Disturb access: used only when you turn on Do Not Disturb while focusing and allow it. The app turns its own Do Not Disturb rule on and off during a focus and does not change your other Do Not Disturb settings.
  • Battery status: read on the device to keep the dark screen on only while charging. It is never sent anywhere.

Usage statistics

Usage statistics stay off until you turn them on. The app asks once on the home screen after your first focus, and you can change your choice at any time with Share usage statistics in Settings. When they are on, the app uses Google Analytics for Firebase to send records of focus sessions started and finished (minutes, whether you reached the end, whether you reached your daily goal), sea friends met, turning on the dark screen (and whether the phone was sideways) and signing in, along with the screens you use, how long you use the app, the device model, Android and app versions, your approximate country estimated from the IP address and an identifier set for each installation. Your name, email address, subject names and advertising ID are not sent. The app shows no ads.

The statistics are used only to see which features are used and to improve the app, and Google keeps them for the retention period set in Google Analytics (up to 14 months). Turning statistics off also clears the analytics data stored on the device. See Firebase privacy information for how Firebase handles data.

App updates

When installed from Google Play, the app uses Google Play's in-app update feature to check for a newer version. To check, the Play Store sends the app version and device information to Google. Google Play handles this check and the update download; the app does not collect any information during this process.

Permissions

Internet access is used only to sign in, to sync your record and, if you turn them on, to send usage statistics. The app also uses notifications, alarms & reminders, vibration and Do Not Disturb access. It does not request camera, microphone, location, photo or contacts access.

Support and your rights

If you email us, we use your reply address and the information you provide to answer and resolve your request, and keep it for as long as needed to handle it. Contact hello@mrlatte.net to request access to, correction or deletion of your information, or to ask about data processing.

Changes to this policy will appear on this page. Material changes to how information is handled will also be explained in the app.
